MORLEY OPEN GARDENS 2017

The first Morley Open Gardens event took place on Saturday and Sunday 1st and 2nd July and appears to have been a resounding success. More than 400 visitors toured the 22 gardens that were open for the weekend, enjoying refreshments at some of them. Many commented that the gardens were some of the most interesting they had ever seen, and were very complimentary about the friendly atmosphere they found throughout the village.

The garden owners and their volunteer helpers then took the opportunity to tour each other's gardens on the Monday and Tuesday evenings, and found that they suddenly had a new group of friends in the village, all with similar interests. The bringing together of people, from the various scattered settlements that form Morley village, has been one of the most satisfying outcomes from the event. A real community spirit and feel-good factor was evident as the weekend came to a close.

Key to the event taking place in the first place, was the willingness of so many villagers to open their gardens to the public, for the benefit of St Matthew's Church. The garden owners themselves had clearly put in a terrific amount of work beforehand, producing the stunning array of gardens that were on show. Their enthusiasm was self-evident, but a big thankyou must also be extended to everyone who helped to make the event such a success. Local media coverage boosted numbers, but the event would not have been possible without the volunteer ticket sellers, church greeters, refreshment workers, and the unseen heroes who donated cakes, made and erected signs, prepared and printed programmes, and generally made the weekend happen.

Proceeds from the two days totalled just over £2,700, a very welcome contribution towards the running costs of St Matthew's Church.

We must now decide when to repeat the event, a two-year gap to 2019 being the current favourite. Anyone wanting to join us next time should give me a ring on 883542. There will always be room for more!
